Valse no. 7 is not actually a waltz. The title comes from a short poem by the Peruvian-Finnish poet Maritza Nuñez, which I set as part of a larger song cycle for female voice and viola da gamba in the summer of 2013. A piano adaptation seemed inevitable, given that the music pays shameless homage to Érik Satie’s early piano idiom. A tip of the hat to another composer I greatly admire also somehow found its way into the song. When I was later offered a chance to write a piece to be performed in his home, on his own piano, I couldn’t resist.
