SUMMARY:Matthew Whittall: The World Tree
DESCRIPTION:Helsingin kamarikuoro\nNils Schweckendiek\, conductor \nMatthew Whittall The World Tree (world premiere) \nSpurred into action by the illegal felling of the iconic Sycamore Gap tree in Northern England in 2023 – an act of mindless vandalism that came to symbolise the wider threat human beings pose to their environment – composer Matthew Whittall and writer Robert Macfarlane have joined forces to create an hour-long work exploring mankind’s relationship with nature. “In place of Romantic sentimentality\, we are looking for a deeper\, more thoughtful connection with the natural world\,” they say. The title The World Tree refers to Norse mythology\, in which the tree Yggdrasil is seen as connecting the visible world both to heaven and to the underworld. As well as being a Requiem for the Sycamore Gap tree\, the work expresses the hope that a forest will be planted in its place. \nMatthew Whittall is one of the most highly respected composers active in Finland today\, and is particularly well-known for his idiomatic and original choral works. Robert Macfarlane is an award-winning British nature writer. This is their first collaboration. \nOn Tue 18.11. at 18.20 there will be an artist talk in Temppeliaukio Church with composer Matthew Whittall and writer Robert Macfarlane. \nIn collaboration with: Kotka-Kymi\, Nurmijärvi and Vihti congregations

Matthew Whittall esittelee kantaesitettävän teoksensa. Haastattelijana Eva Tigerstedt.

SUMMARY:Reflections
DESCRIPTION:North meets North at REFLECTIONS. We close the season in Vancouver and embark on our Northern European tour with a program that transcends the geographic and musical borders between Nordic lands. The northern identity is evident in works by composers both from Canada and the Nordic countries\, including a commission by our composer-in-residence Matthew Whittall. We invite you to explore the musical landscape of our shared REFLECTIONS.

SUMMARY:Kaija Saariaho at 70
DESCRIPTION:Anssi Karttunen\,cello\nSusanna Mälkki\, conductor \nTwo violin sounds – a sforzato and a pizzicato – provided the basic material for the tape used in Kaija Saariaho’s first orchestral work. The French premiere of Verblendungen in 1984 marked the starting point for Saariaho’s international breakthrough. Notes on Light\, in turn\, has been described by cellist Anssi Karttunen\, to whom the work is dedicated\, as a rich journey into the heart of light. \n“I am a choral singer myself and wanted to use Finnish choral singing as the basis of my work\,” says composer Matthew Whittall of his work “Silence Speaks” commissioned for Helsinki Variations and inspired by a Christmas song by Jean Sibelius. \nMatthew Whittall Silence Speaks (world premiere)\nKaija Saariaho Notes on Light\nKaija Saariaho Verblendungen\nSibelius Symphony No. 4
